Discardia on the way to Breathing Room...

Much of this is on its way out the door...yes, it IS a mess.  Eeek.

So.  Here is where I am now...Discardia on the way to Breathing Room.

Getting rid of things via eBay is time consuming and kind of complex, but that's where some of this stuff is going, anyway--I just need time to list the antique teapot, enamel coffeepot, 18th C. style mules or leather slippers, virtually unused.  Books will be offered to a friend before being listed or given away.

(The bins on the floor are full of artwork, both original and prints I offer in my Etsy shop, Cathy Johnson Art & More, so they stay, but I'd love it if I could find a place that wasn't right out in the middle of everything!)

I'm delighted that a dear friend is more into elegant reenacting than we are, now, and he and his camping buddy are taking a fair bit of stuff away.  A big copper cistern for water, a tin biscuit baker, a BIG folding table...gone and welcome!  It's good to know a friend will be using and enjoying them instead of tripping over them, here.

The pile in the other photo includes a bag of art supplies to give to my sketchcrawl buddies...didn't have enough of them show up this time and we forgot the bag in the car...and the current giveaway box, which will go out probably today.  And a heater, and antique books with illustrations I need to scan in my copious spare time, and extra shipping boxes, and...

Yep, it's a mess all right!

My beloved husband is in the basement creating his workroom and simultaneously getting rid of a bunch MORE stuff (why, exactly, did we put two old computers and a monitor down there?), and moving the workbench out of the back room (along with the big folding table) will give us a lot more open space THERE, so we can organize, clean out, and GET TO THE BOOKCASE.

(He was just wishing he'd thought to shoot a "before" photo, so he inspired me to DO so!)

All this stuff served its purpose, in its time, and I'm grateful, as Breathing Room suggests.  It can go to a new home, or recycle, or the dump, with my blessings.  And I won't have quite so much stuff in the way, and will indeed have more room to breathe, both literally and spiritually.

  1. Well, we put the computers and the monitor down there because at the time we did it they cost WAY too much to recycle. Now Staples will take it all free of charge and if we don't want to wait until we're going to Overland Park (the nearest one), Computer Recycling LLC is a tad closer and will at least take the towers free. The monitor will cost twenty-five cents a pound, but since that'll be around five bucks, that's fine.

  3. Amen sister. I had to smile at your monitor comment. I would like to higher a dumpster and put most of the contents of my basement in to it including old computers and monitors!

  4. Sharon, I had to giggle, I just mentioned getting a dumpster the other day! SO much stuff we'll never need and just isn't worth recycling. Or not possible to.

I think in part this is the curse of artists and creative people..."But I could DO something with that!!" "I wanna get back to that when life is simpler!"

  5. I am early resonating with your wish to get back to when life was simpler! I want to get down to just a core palette of paints, I can do this with clothes no problem, but paint? Please keep posting on your simplifying, I am going to follow in your footsteps!

    1. Definitely more difficult with paint! I'm listing at least three palettes on eBay, starting on Sunday...I love my Prang re-habs, and the Russian set, and my Kremer set--all quite different--but enough is enough!

  6. Aha! I am purging myself right now!! In the beginning of going through everything I own. Three bags of books just went out the door Tuesday and I have lots more books to go through. It is a lot of work but feels just wonderful!! Enjoy!! I know it will be worth it. :)

    1. The books are what is hard for me, Rita...partly because I can't figure out WHAT to do with them! Our library doesn't take donations, and some of these really ought to go to the "right home," but really. Lots just need to go away, I'd never even notice.

  7. Go, Cathy, go!

I've found that when the library isn't interested in more donations, Goodwill usually still is. What's nice is that many (most? all?) Goodwill locations are now listing their books and CDs for sale via Amazon. They make more than they would otherwise and the person who really wants that item is more likely to find it. So pleasing!

  8. Hi Dinah! I was sad to see you aren't on Facebook any more as Discardia--I often referred people to your site. I don't know how many people I've given your book to--it's marvelous.

And yes, we should think of Goodwill, thank you (I certainly buy from them, via Amazon!)

I have just filled another few boxes to take to Savers, a Big Brothers and Big Sisters charity, and I don't know if they do likewise.
