"Maine Morning, Early"

"Maine Morning, Early" Watercolor Pencil on Bristol 5" x 7"
I did this little watercolor pencil sketch to capture that sense of prismatic light you see on a foggy morning in Maine. The foreground was dark and sharply defined; the dock in the middleground had more subtle values. In the distance, the tiny island looked ghostly, rising out of the fog. I used the primaries--red, yellow and blue--to suggest the glow as the sun began to burn the moisture out of the air. You can almost hear the foghorn... This was originally done for my North Light book, Watercolor Pencil Magic, now unfortunately out of print. (You can get my updated and added-to CD called Watercolor Pencil Workshop, though, on my webpage at http://cathyjohnson.info –check the catalog section!–or on CafePress, here: http://www.cafepress.com/cathy_johnson –there’s more information, more art, and a whole new chapter on the CD!) $65
